This is because our awareness of the present is born by maintaining a tension between past and future. Without the striving to be historical, we fall back into relative unconsciousness. It is important to recognize that there is a world of difference between functioning in the present, and actually being conscious of it. Mainstream therapy is largely concerned only with the former, while a genuinely psychological approach addresses itself exclusively to the latter.”
