The project of the Frankfurt School was to develop a ‘critical theory’ of contemporary society which would combine philosophy, social theory, economics, and cultural criticism in a new type of interdisciplinary theory. Notable members included Herbert Marcuse, Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno, and Erich Fromm.
